HOW MANY COWS SHOULD BE OBSERVED?<\/strong>
<\/p>

If more than 100 Cows, all animals must be scored.
If there are less than 100 cows, at least 25% of the herd and if there is a group, at least 25% of each group should be scored.
All three regions should be scored; lower leg, udder, side and upper leg.
Scores of 3 and 4 are unacceptable for every region.<\/p>

FOOT SCORING<\/strong><\/p>

The aim of the scoring system is to observe the amount of fertilizer on the foot and how dirty it is.
Score 1<\/strong> if there is little or no fertilizer on the ankles
Score 2<\/strong> if there are small fertilizer splashes on the ankles
Score 3<\/strong> dung plaques on wrists but hair visible
Score 4<\/strong> Having a solid manure plate over the legs
Free-range cows have higher leg soiling when walking through manure-filled aisles.<\/p>

UDDER MIRROR POLLUTION SCORING<\/strong>
<\/p>

Score 1<\/strong> no fertilizer in the udder
Score 2 <\/strong>small manure splashes near the teat
Score 3<\/strong> manure contamination up to the lower half of the udder
Score 4<\/strong> manure plates wrapped around and around the teats<\/p>

NAIL AND UPPER LEG SCORING<\/strong><\/p>

Score 1<\/strong> no manure on nail and leg
Score 2<\/strong> small fertilizer splashes
Score 3<\/strong> different manure areas but feathers visible
Score 4<\/strong> fertilizers combine to form plaques that cover the feathers<\/p>

This is pollution caused by a poorly managed operation with bedding and strips or by tails covered in manure.<\/p>
