How should Scoring Techniques be done?

Scoring Techniques…

For good management of mastitis and farm hygiene, accurate measurements and accurate monitoring are required…

HOW MANY COWS SHOULD BE OBSERVED?

If more than 100 Cows, all animals must be scored.
If there are less than 100 cows, at least 25% of the herd and if there is a group, at least 25% of each group should be scored.
All three regions should be scored; lower leg, udder, side and upper leg.
Scores of 3 and 4 are unacceptable for every region.

FOOT SCORING

The aim of the scoring system is to observe the amount of fertilizer on the foot and how dirty it is.
Score 1 if there is little or no fertilizer on the ankles
Score 2 if there are small fertilizer splashes on the ankles
Score 3 dung plaques on wrists but hair visible
Score 4 Having a solid manure plate over the legs
Free-range cows have higher leg soiling when walking through manure-filled aisles.

UDDER MIRROR POLLUTION SCORING

Score 1 no fertilizer in the udder
Score 2 small manure splashes near the teat
Score 3 manure contamination up to the lower half of the udder
Score 4 manure plates wrapped around and around the teats

NAIL AND UPPER LEG SCORING

Score 1 no manure on nail and leg
Score 2 small fertilizer splashes
Score 3 different manure areas but feathers visible
Score 4 fertilizers combine to form plaques that cover the feathers

This is pollution caused by a poorly managed operation with bedding and strips or by tails covered in manure.
